Look first

  1. Find each of the four principal figures and its horse. Follow one outline until another shape interrupts it, then work out which form sits in front.
  2. Compare the directions of the heads, the held objects and the horses. Do the repeated turns lead you around the image or hold you in particular areas?
  3. Look at the lighter shapes against the dark ground. Read these contrasts as relationships in this photograph, without assuming they reproduce the painting’s original colors.

Put the format in context

The source identifies a hanging scroll with ink and color on silk and gives dimensions of 72.4 × 58.4 cm. The artist is unidentified, and the public date label in the imported record is empty. The supplied image is monochrome, even though the medium includes color. Keeping those three facts separate prevents the photograph’s appearance from becoming a claim about the original work.

A question for your next visit

Return after looking at Bird. How does a crowded field change the effort needed to recognize a single outline?
