SOURCES, RIGHTS & PRIVACY

A little more context.
A clear starting point.

Japan Art Atlas is an independent GIZUMO project for discovering Japanese art through a small selection of museum collection records. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

This is a selected, dated collection. There are no ads, analytics, accounts, or visitor submissions.

Where the collection comes from

Artwork facts come from The Metropolitan Museum of Art Collection API. The importer uses the current paginated search endpoint and individual object records, without an API key. The interface reports the number of records actually imported, not the museum’s full holdings.

Each artwork includes a museum-record link, acquisition credit, source metadata date, retrieval timestamp, and image provenance. Missing source fields are marked “Not recorded.” Short descriptions are assembled from collection metadata, not copied from museum essays.

Images and reuse

We include only Japanese works whose API record explicitly marks them as public domain, supplies an official Open Access image, and contains no conflicting rights notice. The downloaded images are the museum’s unmodified smaller JPEGs. They are displayed without cropping.

The Met makes its eligible Open Access images and collection data available under CC0 1.0. Read The Met’s Terms and Conditions for the source’s usage terms, including third-party rights and trademarks. The museum’s name is used to identify the source; no museum logo is used.

What to keep in mind

Privacy and external links

Searches and filters run in your browser against the included dataset. This preview does not use cookies, tracking pixels, third-party fonts, or analytics. Artwork images are served from the same site, so viewing the collection does not call the museum’s API or image server. Your hosting provider may keep ordinary server-access logs.

Opening a museum record, original image, or other external source visits that provider’s website and is subject to its policies.

Advertising and optional analytics

Labelled advertising spaces are reserved between collection rows and after artwork details. No ad provider or live advertising code is active. Ads are separate from artwork controls and do not cover the content.

Google Analytics 4 is configured as an optional, disabled integration. It will remain off until the hosting destination, privacy notice, consent controls, and network behavior have been reviewed. No consent-denied pings or analytics requests are sent before consent. If enabled later, analytics consent must be explicit, can be rejected or withdrawn, and is separate from advertising consent. The included site-provided analytics choice control is not a certified advertising CMP.

The data, in the open

You can inspect the collection JSON. It includes source URLs, original image URLs, retrieval times, rights flags, credit lines, file hashes, and dimensions. All images have an unchanged-file hash recorded for verification.
